Cesab, a producer of counterbalanced forklift trucks, was founded in Bologna in 1942. Since then, constant growth in technology and output has enabled it to consolidate its position amongst the Italian leaders in the materials handling sector.

The first electric forklift dates from 1951, when it represented an addition to the electric tractors in the existing Cesab range; it was in 1954 that the firm launched its first Diesel-powered model equipped with mechanical transmission and dry-disc clutch. Since then the range has been continuously extended and upgraded to satisfy the market's and the users' many and varied needs, and in the early '70s the firm achieved leadership in the electric range with the introduction of the electronic control.

1994 marked a decisive turning-point for Cesab. The coming-together of the Cesab tradition and the design generated by the Pininfarina Research and Development Centre led to the creation of a completely new range of trucks, in which the combination of ergonomics and technology in a ground-breaking product allowed Cesab to increase its business throughout Europe. 1994 also saw the birth of the trading company BTCESAB for distribution of the complementary products of Cesab and BT (a Swedish specialist in indoor trucks) in Italy.

In April 2000, BT Industries AB acquired a 100% holding in Cesab. This group was itself acquired by Toyota in July 2000, by means of a take-over bid which involved 97.1% of the shares in BT Industries AB, and consequently also the controlling interest in Cesab, a subsidiary of this group.
This operation created a world leadership in the management of the materials handling and warehouse management requirements. Today Cesab is a respected trademark in the sector and one of the Italian leaders in the production and sale of electric, Diesel and LPG-powered counterbalanced forklift trucks.
